Green Peas Pulao recipe

Pulao, a rice dish originally adopted from the Persian cuisine is known by many names like pilaf, pulao, pilau etc. There are many variations of the pulao in Indian cuisine prepared using different ingredients like spices, herbs, vegetables, lentils, meat, chicken or fish, broth,  etc.

 

This version is a simple vegetarian Peas Pulao prepared using with minimal ingredients and spices. You can add different vegetables to it too to make your own variations. Serve this Pulao with any vegetarian or non-vegetarian curries like Butter Chicken,  Spinach Chicken curry, Vegetarian meatball Curry,  Masala shrimp or Kheema along with a side of raita or Cucumber salad.

Green Peas Pulao recipe

Green Peas Pulao is a simple vegetarian recipe prepared using with minimal ingredients and spices.

Ingredients
  • 1 - 1/2 cups Basmati Rice
  • 2 - 1/4 cups Water
  • 2 teaspoon Ghee
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 5-6 Peppercorns
  • 4-5 Cloves
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 cup Cashews (optional)
  • 1 Onion thinly sliced
  • 1 cup Green Peas
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger minced
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic minced
  • 1 Green chilly pepper minced
  • Salt as required
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground Pepper
  • 1/4 cup Cilantro chopped
  • 1/2 cup Mint leaves chopped (optional)
Instructions
  1. Wash and soak the rice in water for about 15-20 minutes. Discard the water and drain.
  2. Heat ghee in a pot and add cumin seeds, whole spices along with cashews. Once the spices are fragrant and cashews turn golden brown, add the onions and cook until golden (about 5 minutes). Next, add the minced garlic, ginger and green chilly pepper and fry for another minute.

  3. (Optional) Add mint leaves and fry for about a minute

  4. Stir in the peas and soaked rice along with some salt and pepper. Stir gently for another minute.
  5. Add water and let it boil on medium heat till all the water is soaked. Then cover the pot and simmer on a low flame for about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Once done, let it rest, covered for about 5 minutes. Add chopped cilantro and fluff the rice gently with a fork. Serve warm.
